Internship Virginia is a new service designed to promote internship opportunities for regional college students in SW Virginia/NE Tennessee. Our goal is to help more students to secure valuable internship placements while providing regional and mid-Atlantic employers with the “best and brightest” from our region.
We will work very closely with career centers at our partner area colleges and universities as well as employers to provide an expanded regional clearinghouse of opportunities.
It is no secret that we live in a globally-competitive economy. Just as many employers have adopted new strategies for the marketplace, so, too, must our college students. In fact, more and more employers simply expect new college graduates to have meaningful internship experiences as a part of their undergraduate education! More and more employers also prefer to hire new employees from their internship pool. Want a good job? Get an internship!

The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia, is the home of the Internship Virginia project. The Higher Education Center is a state agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia with the twin goals of expanding higher education opportunities and economic development in our region. Some eighty undergraduate and graduate degree programs from nine colleges and universities are offered on site in Abingdon. The Higher Education Center, housed in a beautiful facility overlooking the mountains of SW Virginia, also offers meeting and conference facilities with state-of-the-art technology.
The Higher Education Center is also home to the Global Virginia project. This award-winning program provides trade promotion assistance to area businesses and coordinates international business study abroad programs for a network of small colleges in the area. The Global Virginia project has been the recipient of major grant awards from the Virginia Tobacco Commission and the U.S. Dept. of Education.
